In 2001, Rice Professor and Nobel Laureate Richard Smalley predicted that humanity can face all of its top challenges -- plentiful food, clean water, healthy living conditions, population control, political stability -- if solutions are found to provide the world with sustainable, affordable and secure energy.

Rice University has adopted the vision of Building the Bridge to an Affordable, Sustainable, and Secure Energy Future. Satisfying the world's energy appetite will involve a portfolio of sources, improved  efficiency, and a change in lifestyle to reduce our energy needs. Rice faculty are working on a range of technologies to address near and long term energy issues, as well as studying environmental consequences of our energy choices.
